"In connection with the 14th anniversary of the signing of the Nakhichevan Agreement, which laid the foundations of the Organization of Turkic States, we heartily congratulate you on the Day of Cooperation of the Turkic States," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a press release issued on Wednesday, October 3.

Having started in 1992 as the "Summits of the Heads of State of the Turkic-speaking states", today this process has turned into a full-fledged international organization thanks to the firm will and joint efforts of the participating countries, the ministry noted.

The Organization of Turkic States aims at actively expanding and deepening cooperation between Member States, harmonizing national potentials and promoting peace and stability as a responsible and responsive regional player on the world stage.

In his statement, Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States Kubanychbek Omuraliev said that this day "symbolizes the birth of our organization" and "embodies unity for our peoples and future generations, and today we collectively celebrate our common path and achievements."

The Organization of Turkic States, formerly called the Turkic Council or the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States, originally emerged as a summit of the heads of Turkic States in the early 1990s and eventually became the International Council in 2009.

Its members are Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan and Hungary have observer status.

Ashgabat takes an active part in the activities of the OTG at all its levels. Only last month, Turkmenistan was represented at the Meeting of the official Centers for Foreign Policy Studies of the member countries and observers of the OTG, held on September 28 in Astana, and the OTG Forum on Multimodal Transport and Logistics, held on September 14 in Istanbul.
