Regional cooperation on the protection of the marine environment of the Caspian Sea was discussed in Geneva by the delegations of the Caspian littoral countries
The ministerial consultations of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, known as the "Tehran Convention", were held in Geneva on September 21-22. The meeting was attended by delegations of the Caspian littoral states - Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia.
According to the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry, the meeting discussed the institutional mechanisms of the Tehran Convention Secretariat, priority areas of regional cooperation in the field of environmental protection, as well as issues related to the final document of the consultations.
The Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea – the "Tehran Convention" was adopted in Tehran in 2003 and is the first legally binding regional agreement signed by all five Caspian littoral countries. The document is aimed not only at protecting the Caspian environment from possible sources of pollution, but also at preserving, restoring and protecting the marine environment of the Caspian Sea.
