Turkmenistan’s preparation for the climate summit in Dubai was reviewed at a meeting of partners


The next Coordination meeting of the climate group of development partners was held in Ashgabat on Friday, September 15. The event, aimed at promoting the efforts of the government of Turkmenistan to implement international obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement, was hosted by UNDP and the British Embassy.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the diplomatic corps in the country, including UN agencies, the German Society for International Cooperation, the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program, the UAE Embassy in Ashgabat and young ambassadors of the SDGs.
The meeting also discussed preparations for the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held in Dubai, UAE, from November 30 to December 12. In addition, participants were informed about the progress of the preparation of the 4th National Communication of Turkmenistan on climate change and the development of the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory System.
“UNDP is pleased to be one of the co-organizers of this important meeting, which serves as an effective platform for exchanging information on current initiatives and discussing specific further steps to support the implementation of the country’s climate agenda,” Narine Sahakyan, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan said. - Today’s meeting is also an excellent opportunity to discuss and expand our joint support for Turkmenistan’s participation in COP28 in Dubai.

“With COP28 just around the corner in the UAE, which will include the first-ever Global Assessment of progress on the Paris Agreement, it is vital that we coordinate our actions with our partners in Turkmenistan,” Stephen Conlon, UK Ambassador to Turkmenistan said. - I was delighted to attend my first Climate
Development Partners Group meeting, and look forward to participating in upcoming climate change youth events in different parts of Turkmenistan.
Dmitry Shlapachenko, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, said that he was encouraged by the results of the government's efforts of the country to create a regional technology center on climate change, achieved with the support of the UN system.
“I am pleased that the Climate Partners Group has played a positive role in supporting such an initiative and providing a platform for information exchange,” he added.
During the meeting, development partners provided an update on their current activities and planned projects to support Turkmenistan in its efforts to mitigate climate change, build resilience and strengthen adaptation measures.
