Turkmen youth as part of a delegation from Central Asia visited the Museum of rami, a fabric that has been woven from Chinese nettle for thousands of years, in the Rongchang district of central China, writes chinanews.com.cn .

The technology of growing and manufacturing rami fabric appeared in Rongchang more than a thousand years ago. Today, a product made of Chinese nettle is the hallmark of the district. The fabric is exported to the Republic of Korea, Japan and Southeast Asian countries.

Chinese nettle grows in tropical and subtropical regions and has high strength and hygroscopicity.

The process of making rami fabric is quite complex and time-consuming. First, you need to manually divide the dried nettles into thin threads, then combine them into a long yarn. After that, the yarn goes through a number of stages: applying starch, distributing, drying, twisting balls, etc. Finally, the yarn turns into fabric on a loom. This breathable and eco-friendly Rongchang fabric is very popular in Asian countries.

The participants of the delegation from Central Asia not only got acquainted with the valuable experience of the People's Republic of China in preserving cultural heritage and turning ancient technology into economically profitable production, but also tried their hand at weaving rami themselves. They also learned about the variety of Chinese nettle products, such as clothes, bed linen, bags, scarves, etc., and how they combine with modern design and fashion.
