UN-Habitat experts paid a working visit to Ashgabat


Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Mahri Bashimova met with representatives of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN- Habitat) on Friday Katya Schaefer and Herman Pienaar, who are in Ashgabat on a working visit.
During the meeting, issues related to the current state of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UN-HABITAT were discussed, as well as specific areas for further cooperation were outlined. In this regard, the parties agreed to jointly develop a roadmap for cooperation, the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reported.
The possibility of opening a UN-Habitat office in Turkmenistan was also considered.
The fact that Ashgabat is ready to host the UN-Habitat country office was stated in July by the Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Serdar Joraev during a meeting with the Executive Director of the UN Human Settlements Program Maimuna Mohd Sharif on the sidelines of the 2023 High-level Political Forum in New York.
At the same time, the Minister invited the UN-Habitat expert mission to visit Turkmenistan in early September of this year.
UN-Habitat experts participated in the UN technical mission to the city of Arkadag in February this year, as well as in the opening ceremony of the new city at the end of June. They contributed to the development of recommendations for the implementation of the 2nd stage of the construction of the city of Arkadag and the Ashgabat City project.
Turkmenistan's cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme on Human Settlements contributes to the promotion of national urban policy, as well as rules, principles of planning and design, urban economy and finance.
UN-Habitat is a United Nations programme working towards a better future for cities. Its mission is to promote the socially and environmentally sustainable development of human settlements, to provide adequate housing for all.
