A huge commemorative coin weighing several kilograms and studded on both sides with thousands of diamonds was presented by the British East India Company on the eve of the first anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“This extraordinary commemorative coin is designed to celebrate the enduring legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” the company said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The coin was named "Crown". It is the size of a basketball and is adorned on both sides with smaller gold coins and studded with diamonds. It took 3.61 kilograms of gold of the highest standard to make it. The work is encrusted with 6426 diamonds, and 83 specialists from eight countries of the world took part in its creation, the company's website says.

The reverse contains a gold inlay depicting the last portrait of Elizabeth II, and thousands of diamonds around form the flag of the United Kingdom. The front side is decorated with four coins with earlier portraits of the queen and six coins with the image of virtues, on this side the precious stones form an elegant pattern.

It is valued at around 18.5 million pounds and, if sold, could become the most expensive coin in the world. That record is now held by the Double Eagle coin, which went under the hammer in 2021 for £15.2 million.

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain ruled the country for over 70 years. She passed away on 8 September 2022 in Scotland at the age of 96. Her funeral took place on 19 September at Westminster Abbey.
