The capital of Turkmenistan is famous in the whole world for its white marble architecture, many constructions in which number not only buildings, but also monuments or sculptures, have already became the main sights of the city, and some even have been included as "most of the most " in the Guinness Book of Records. It is the first and largest of 26 museums established after Turkmenistan’s independence. The official opening of the museum took place on November 12, 1998. Today the exposition of the museum complex is divided into 7 thematic galleries in which, in total, more than 166 thousand unique exhibits, many of which represent special historical and cultural value, are kept. In the history and ethnography museum there are the ancient artefacts found during excavation at Nyssa, Marv and Gonur, a collection of ancient Turkmen carpets, rare samples of national clothes, jewellery, and ancient weapon. Figurines of Athena, Eros, gold plated silver griffins, horn–shaped rhytons of ivory, and epoch of Parthia, gold ornaments and medallions-seals from Margiana, Buddhist artefacts are stored in 9 halls. Besides others, here it is possible to see a fossilized piece of wood of the Palaeozoic period, which age is 270 million years, footprints of dinosaurs, the Kunyaurgench meteorite with a weight of 820 kg, fallen in 1998, and many other things.
