The Indian government plans to introduce a resolution demanding the use of the word "Bharat" (the name of India in Hindi) as the official name of the state during a special session of Parliament, scheduled for September 18-21. This was reported by the Indian TV channel Times Now, citing sources in the ruling Indian People's Party (Bharatiya Janata Party).

The official languages in India are Hindi and English, while in English the country is called India, and in Hindi - Bharat. The first article of the Indian constitution states: "India, also Bharat, is a union of states." Traditionally, the English name was used at the official international level, and the name "Bharat" was used domestically.

For the first time in the history of independent India, the term "Bharat" was used for an international audience in an official invitation to a dinner hosted by President Draupadi Murmu, at which the leaders of the G20 (G20) states are expected. “President of Bharat has the honor to invite you to dinner on Saturday, September 9 <...>,” the text of the official invitations of foreign leaders reads.

Changing the international name of India is one of the points of the program of the Indian People's Party, which stands on the nationalist positions. Representatives of the political force believe that the international name of the country is a reference to the times of British colonization.
