The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the future railway between Iraq and Iran took place at the border crossing in the city of Shalamche in the Iraqi province of Basra. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad al-Sudani and first Iranian Vice President Mohammad Mohber participated, the Shafaq News information portal reports.

Baghdad and Tehran signed an agreement in 2019 providing for the construction of a railway between the cities of Basra and Shalamche on the Iran-Iraq border. The transport project is implemented within the framework of the contract and is designed for two years. The railway corridor will strengthen Iraq's logistics infrastructure and expand the country's partnership, trade, economic, cultural and tourist ties with neighboring states.

"The railway connection through the border crossing in Shalamche will become one of the routes for the transportation of passengers from Iran and Central Asian countries traveling to holy sites located in the Iraqi provinces of Najaf and Karbala," the Iraqi Prime Minister said, speaking at the ceremony.

Mohammad Mohber, in turn, expressed confidence that after the completion of the construction of the railway, "trade exchange between Iran and Iraq expects a huge jump," the source said.
