OPEC member Iraq announced on Thursday that it had reached an initial agreement with Turkmenistan to import gas to run its power plants.

According to Deputy Oil Minister for Gas Supplies Ezzat Saber, the agreement between the two countries was reached after talks in Ashgabat between a delegation from the oil and electricity ministries, other Iraqi officials and Turkmen gas sector officials.

In a statement released by the official Iraqi news agency INA, Saber said that a final agreement would be signed before the end of 2023.

"The agreement, which will be signed towards the end of the year, will determine the volumes of gas that will be supplied by Turkmenistan to Iraq," Saber said.

He added that in accordance with the memorandum of cooperation being prepared for this purpose, an agreement in principle had been reached on importing volumes of gas to meet part of the needs of power plants, and expressed the hope that by the end of this year the memorandum would be signed and would include proposed volumes and mechanisms that would accepted between the two countries.

Saber called the agreement a big step towards expanding the horizons of cooperation with Turkmenistan, which is one of the most important gas producing countries in the region and the world.
