Coordination in the field of water resources and climate was discussed at the summit in Ashgabat
The Presidents of Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan discussed cooperation in the field of water resources and climate within the framework of the extensive agenda of the trilateral summit held today, August 4, in Ashgabat.
As follows from the Statement of the heads of States published following the meeting, the parties agreed to conduct further joint research and development in the field of effective management, protection and rational use of water resources, conservation and reuse of water resources, including using the capabilities of existing authorized regional bodies.
Noting the importance of existing and under construction hydropower facilities for solving water and energy issues in the Amudarya River basin, the Presidents called for strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation between the countries on the integrated and rational use of water and energy resources.
The Heads of State also stressed the priority importance of rational use of water resources of the Amudarya River, given the importance of continuing a constructive dialogue on water and energy issues.
During the summit, the need to improve the mechanisms of interaction in order to ensure an effective response to new challenges, including those related to climate change and the potential increase in the load on the water resources of the Amudarya River was noted.
In addition, the heads of the three Central Asian States noted the importance of further strengthening cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation, combating desertification, land degradation, glacier melting, environmental protection, early warning systems, ecology, biodiversity conservation, promotion of common projects and programs in these areas, as well as promotion of joint initiatives. meeting common interests within the framework of regional and international platforms and cooperation mechanisms.
