Iranian Minister: Iran will soon start exchanging electricity with Russia

Iranian Energy Minister Ali-Akbar Mehrabyan said that his country will soon start exchanging electricity with Russia through Azerbaijan, the ISNA news agency reported on Sunday.
Iran is considering two routes, one through Azerbaijan and the other through Armenia and Georgia, for the exchange of electricity with Russia, Mehrabyan told ISNA, noting that Iran is in final negotiations on the start of projects.
According to the minister, the Azerbaijani route involves a less complicated process, since Iran and Azerbaijan have synchronized their energy networks to the necessary extent.
Iran and Russia can complement each other favorably by mutually exporting surplus electricity, since the latter has a peak in electricity consumption in winter, and the former in summer, he added.
Mehrabyan stressed that Iran is also striving to connect its energy system with the networks of other countries in the region in order to ensure the stability of electricity supply throughout the year.
Iran is currently exchanging electricity with Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said, adding that Iran is seeking to increase the number of such transactions.
