Ashgabat ready to host UN-Habitat country office
Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Serdar Jorayev met with Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN- Habitat) Maimouna Mohd Sharif on the sidelines of the 2023 High-Level Political Forum in New York, during which a side event was held with the presentation of the model of the city of Arkadag for implementation SDG 11.
Joraev expressed gratitude for the participation of UN-Habitat in this event and for the speech of the Program representative, thanked the experts of this structure for the leadership and experience that was presented as part of the UN mission to the city of Arkadag in February this year, as well as for the visit of the delegate from the Program to the opening city at the end of June and its participation in the International Economic Forum.
The Minister emphasized the importance and timeliness of the received Mission Report and recommendations for the implementation of the 2nd stage of the Arkadag City project and the Ashgabat City project.
“Cooperation with the UN Human Settlements Development Program actively contributes to the further promotion of national urban policy, as well as rules, principles of planning and design, urban economics and finance,” Serdar Joraev noted, declaring his readiness to locate the UN-Habitat country office in Ashgabat.
The minister invited the UN-Habitat expert mission to visit Turkmenistan in early September this year.
“Our country remains an active member of the UN-Habitat Group of Friends, sustainable urbanization and the new urban development agenda,” he added.
Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Serdar Jorayev also met with UN Assistant Secretary General for Development Coordination Oscar Fernandez- Taranco.
Noting that Turkmenistan is actively and productively pursuing partnerships with the Regional Development Coordination Office, including its Director, Gwi Yopson, who visited Turkmenistan in 2022 and supported national initiatives in the field of economic reforms, the Minister informed about the ongoing preparations for the SDG Summit, scheduled for September this year. He thanked the UN country team for their support in preparing for this event, in which the participation of the Turkmen delegation at a high level is expected.
Joraev invited Oscar Fernandez-Taranko to visit the city of Arkadag, as well as to take part in the celebration of Independence Day and Day of Neutrality of Turkmenistan.
