The XIV Elena Obraztsova International Competition for Young Opera Singers started on Wednesday in St. Petersburg immediately from the second round. 56 performers from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Mongolia will compete, TASS reports.

The performances of the contestants will be held in the Academic Chapel of St. Petersburg, where all lovers of opera and vocals will be able to watch the entire course of the musical competition for free.

“This year, due to a number of circumstances, we had to conduct the first round on video recordings. A total of 383 applications were selected for participation. Of these, 56 applications turned out to be passing according to the points scored. And the directorate decided to allow all 56 contestants to participate in the 2nd round, although usually this number does not exceed 40,” Natalya Ignatenko, director of the competition and general director of the Elena Obraztsova Charitable Foundation said.

According to the organizers, there will be a high level of competition, since among the applicants there are participants in the recent competition named after Pyotr Tchaikovsky, honored with awards. Opera singers will perform two chamber vocal compositions by Russian and foreign authors and an opera aria by an Italian composer, accompanied by piano.

The final round will take place on July 15 - the contestants will present interpretations of two opera arias, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Academic Capella. The review will end on the same day with an awards ceremony and a gala concert of laureates.

The competition is held within the framework of the V International Music Festival “A Tribute to Elena Obraztsova” with the support of the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg. The jury of the XIV competition includes singers and musical theater figures from Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Italy, and Switzerland.
