Kyrgyz citizens who have reached the age of 16, when applying for documents, will be able to take a matronymic (mother's name) instead of a patronymic, if desired. The Constitutional Court of the Republic called on the Government of the country to make appropriate amendments to the legislation to develop the institute of matronymic for citizens of the country who have reached the age of majority.

"The decision is final. Not subject to appeal. Comes into force from the moment of proclamation. The decision is mandatory for all state bodies, local self-government bodies, officials, public associations, legal entities and individuals and is subject to execution throughout the republic," the message of the instance reads.

Earlier, local activist Altyn Kapalova had been suing the state authorities of the country for several years, trying to ensure that any adult could take a matronymic instead of a patronymic. On her page on the social network, the woman thanked the Constitutional Court for this decision and congratulated her 16-year–old son, Kapalov Daniyar Altynovich, who will soon go to get a passport and will be able to take her name as a matronymic.

However, the court decision prohibits giving the child a matronymic at birth.
