Astrakhan shipping companies are ready to join the work on the creation of a shipping line on the Caspian Sea between Astrakhan and the Turkmen port of Turkmenbashi. The region has the potential to build up the fleet, the Governor of the Astrakhan Region Igor Babushkin said on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), reports TASS.

Earlier it was reported that at the beginning of the year negotiations were held in Astrakhan with the participation of representatives of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan on the opening of regular shipping lines on the Caspian Sea between Russian ports and the Turkmen port of Turkmenbashi. It was noted that regular sea transportation will contribute to the economic growth of all participating countries. It is assumed that the international multimodal corridor to Russia through the Caspian Sea will pass from Kyrgyzstan through the territory of Uzbekistan to the seaport of Turkmenbashi by land with further cargo transportation by sea to Russian ports.

"We have worked with our shipping companies on the issue of opening a shipping line [between the Astrakhan port of Olya and the Turkmen Turkmenbashi], they are ready to get involved in this work. In addition, our shipbuilders are ready to build vessels to work on the Caspian shipping lines, there is enough experience and competence. This will contribute to the growth of cargo traffic along the international North-South transport corridor and reduce the costs of cargo owners when transporting goods across the Caspian Sea," Babushkin said.

In 2022, the governments of Turkmenistan and the Astrakhan region agreed to build a logistics center of the republic in the port of Olya, this is a major commercial port of Russia in the Caspian basin, located 100 km south of Astrakhan. A business plan for the project is currently being developed. It is expected that its implementation will take two years.
