Painting by Nicholas Roerich, written during the Central Asian expedition, put up for auction for one ruble


Nicholas Roerich's painting "Takla-Makan" put up for auction with a starting price of one ruble. The leading bid on June 13 is three million rubles, according to the website of the Litfond auction house.
The sketch was made by the artist during the Central Asian expedition (1923-1928). The team passed the section of the route along the borders of the Takla Makan desert from the Sanju pass to the city of Khotan in late 1925 - early 1926. He created a series of paintings that captured the unique Asian desert and nature.
Nicholas Roerich is also known as a stage designer, philosopher, mystic, archaeologist and traveler. He is the author of about seven thousand paintings. He was the director of the school of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of Arts, was at the head of the artistic association "World of Art". In addition to the Central Asian, he also participated in the Manchurian expedition.
