Joint plans on transport and transit were outlined at the Turkmen-Latvian meeting in Riga


The third meeting of the Turkmen-Latvian Transport Working Group was held in Riga on Monday.
The meeting was chaired by the heads of the Turkmen and Latvian members of the group - the Deputy Chairman of the Agency "Turkmendenizderyaellary" of the Agency for Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Seyitguly Bayseyidov and Deputy Secretary of State of the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Latvia Uldis Reimanis.
During the negotiations, the interaction within the framework of the Agreement between the Governments of Turkmenistan and Latvia on international road transport and the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the joint commission on international road transport in Riga on Tuesday, June 13 were considered.
The parties exchanged information on the situation in the field of transport logistics in Latvia and Turkmenistan and discussed plans for the development of logistics supply chains between the two countries.

Information was provided on the advantages and possibilities of using Latvian ports (Riga, Ventspils and Liepaja), railways, highways and Riga International Airport as an integrated complex of multimodal corridors for handling import, export and transit cargo of Turkmenistan. The opportunity for Turkmen entrepreneurs to create production and transport and logistics enterprises, terminals, warehouses on the territories of Latvian ports and special economic zones for the production, storage, processing and distribution of Turkmen goods on the market of the European Union, the Baltic States and Scandinavia was particularly emphasized. The Latvian side stressed the possibilities of developing efficient rail transportation provided by the Baltika-Transit container train.
The Turkmen delegation, in turn, informed the Latvian colleagues about the potential and capacities of the International Seaport of Turkmenbashi, the use of railway yards for multimodal cargo transportation through the territory of Turkmenistan towards the countries of Central Asia and beyond.
Representatives of Latvian companies were invited to visit the port of Turkmenbashi for a more substantive discussion of their use of its services.
The group members agreed to develop the export of raw materials and manufactured goods of Turkmenistan to Europe and the transportation of import goods in the opposite direction through the ports, railway, automobile and aviation infrastructure of Latvia.

The possibility of increasing container and combined intermodal cargo transportation between Latvia and Turkmenistan, as well as other Central Asian countries with the connection of various transit corridors and with an emphasis on the development of alternative logistics routes based on TRACECA was noted.
Emphasizing the special role of transport and logistics in ensuring trade between Europe and Asia, the parties highly appreciated the adoption of a Joint Communique on cooperation between the national transport departments of Turkmenistan, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
The parties agreed to consider opportunities to develop air cargo transportation between Turkmenistan and Latvia, creating new logistics chains in Eurasia for the supply of e-commerce goods from Asia to Europe and North America and vice versa.
In this context, the possibility of using the cargo infrastructure of Riga Airport and all airports of Turkmenistan for transit and flow of imported goods from Scandinavia and the Baltic States, transportation of perishable agricultural products from Turkmenistan to the Baltic States, as well as the flow of Chinese e-commerce through Turkmenistan to Latvia was considered. Prospects of cooperation with Latvian Post (Latvijas Pasts) and Cainio Global using the fleet of cargo planes of Turkmenistan Airlines were noted.
