The Cuban government is eyeing Turkmenistan's opportunities to forge closer economic ties. This topic was the subject of a meeting between Prime Minister of Cuba, Manuel Marrero Cruz, along with Minister of Health of this country, Jose Angel Portal Miranda, on Thursday with a delegation of Turkmenistan headed by Deputy Prime Minister for the financial and economic bloc Hojamurad Geldymuradov.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Sochi.

“We discussed with Deputy Prime Minister of Turkmenistan Khodjamurad Geldymuradov the good state of bilateral relations and the potential for expanding economic and trade ties with this country, a producer of gas, wheat and fertilizers,” Marrero wrote on his Twitter account.

A high-ranking Cuban official arrived in Sochi as a representative of an observer country in the EAEU. Marrero proposed to the union the creation of an industrial park for the Mariel Special Zone, designed to develop production chains that strengthen interregional integration, adding that Havana is ready to host the intergovernmental council of the EAEU. “Cuba offers a gateway to the Latin American and Caribbean region,” he said.

In turn, Hojamurad Geldymuradov, at an expanded meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, noted the role of Turkmenistan in the development of the Central Asia-Caspian-Black Sea and Central Asia-Persian Gulf routes, which will help intensify cargo flows between the regions of Central Asia, Europe and China.

In February 2023, a new Ambassador of Cuba (with residence in Baku) Carlos Enrique Valdez de la Concepciona was accredited to Turkmenistan. During the talks of the Cuban diplomat in Ashgabat at that time, mutual interest in developing relations in the fields of culture and sports and in the area of healthcare was especially noted.
