The current power exchange capacity between Iran and Turkmenistan of 500 MW will double to 1,000 MW after the opening of a new transmission line between the two countries. This was stated by Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabyan to journalists after a meeting with a delegation accompanying Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during a visit to Tehran on Tuesday.

According to the minister, the terms of construction and commissioning of a four- circuit power transmission line between Mary and Serakhs with a length of 150 km were agreed at the meeting. The contractor for the construction of this line is an Iranian company, which uses equipment and facilities also produced in Iran.

Rich natural gas reserves and the construction of a network of power plants equipped with modern gas turbines have allowed Ashgabat to become a major electricity exporter in the region. In 2022, its exports grew by 30% compared to 2021. The country supplies electricity to Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan.
