Alireza Enayati, Director General for Persian Gulf Affairs at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, told IRNA that during the recent visit of the Sultan of Oman Haytham bin Tariq Al Said to Tehran, transport and transit cooperation was among the main issues discussed.

According to Enayati, serious negotiations are underway between Tehran and Muscat to activate the "Ashgabat Agreement", which concerns the transit route between Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

He expressed hope that the corridor will be launched in the future.

The Ashgabat Agreement is a multimodal transport agreement between the governments of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Oman. Kazakhstan, Qatar and India have also joined the agreement, while Pakistan's accession is under consideration.

The agreement is aimed at creating an international transport and transit corridor facilitating the transportation of goods between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf, improving connectivity in the Eurasian region and synchronizing it with other transport corridors, including the International North-South Transport Corridor.

In August 2022, in Avaza, Turkmenistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan signed the Additional Protocol to this Agreement. The parties are striving to simplify the visa regime for participants in international road transport, determine a single through tariff for rail freight and harmonize other procedures.
