Ashgabat has become a meeting place for special representatives of Central Asian countries and the European Union on Afghanistan, in which representatives of the EU, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan arrived in the Turkmen capital.

The purpose of the meeting is to promote the dialogue platform on Afghanistan, launched in a virtual format in 2021 and being improved in 2022 and 2023.

On Friday, May 26, the participants will discuss the development and economic situation in Afghanistan, cooperation in providing assistance to the people of Afghanistan and the intensification of cooperation in areas of common interest.

On Thursday, EU Special Representative for Central Asia Terhi Hakala and EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan Thomas Nicklasson were received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The meeting was held by Acting Foreign Minister Vepa Hajiyev.

During the conversation, the sides exchanged views on the current partnership agenda and prospects for further development of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the EU, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Cooperation on regional security and development, environmental issues and issues of climate change, environmental protection, "green" and digital transformations, interaction in the energy sector and the transport and logistics industry were identified as priority areas.

The sides exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and considered issues related to cooperation and maintaining a broad dialogue on Afghan issues.

In addition, the upcoming major events in the "Central Asia – European Union" format were discussed.
