Students of the Maya Kulieva Turkmen National Conservatory became prize- winners of the XII International Conference-competition held by the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory.

The theme of the contest of scientific works of students, undergraduates and postgraduates is "Ethnomusicology: history, theory, practice", and within this topic there were several other research areas in which they managed to show off their knowledge and impress the jury with the novelty of the scientific approach and representatives of Turkmenistan, who took two first and one third place in different nominations.

Among the winners is a 4th-year student majoring in String Instruments, Jemal Agadzhanova. She was awarded first place in the nomination "Folk instrument – playing – musician: problems of system study". Jemal devoted her competitive work to the study of musical instruments related to finds at archaeological sites of Turkmenistan. She presented interesting information, systematized after a detailed study of a large volume of scientific literature and artifacts with images of musical instruments. These are percussion – timpani, tambourines and drum; wind instruments - Pan flute, pipes, aulos and horns; strings - kithara, lyre and two- stringed lutes.

Dunyagozel Begalieva, a third-year student majoring in Opera, took another first place in the nomination "Musical Folklore of the peoples of the world". Na chose maiden songs in the Turkmen musical folklore as one of the unique directions of folk art as her theme. These are the tunes of laleler, hoovdiler – lullabies, wedding "Noi-noi", "Yar-yar", monjukatdy and others. The contestant not only revealed the traditions of performing these genres in the scientific report, but also demonstrated it with her voice.

In the nomination "Musical Epic in its ethno-cultural diversity", a 2nd-year student majoring in Musicology, Mahri Kurbankuliyeva, took third place. She spoke on the topic "The peculiarities of the destan performance of the Mary region of Turkmenistan" on the example of the work of the famous Bakhshi Gurt Yakubov, one of the brightest and original storytellers of destans. He became the creator of a special tradition of their performance, which was continued by his followers. In its sound, numerous ancient destans and legends have received a new life.

The jury of the conference-competition also noted with letters of thanks the work of the scientific supervisors of the participants, these are senior teachers of the Department of "History of Music" Agajan Achilov, Bahargul Yakubova and Rovshen Muhammedov.
