Turkmenistan chaired the UN General Assembly debate on the Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation in Central Asia


On May 16, the UN General Assembly held a debate on agenda item 61 "Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation of Central Asia", which was initiated by Turkmenistan. This is reported on the website of the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN.
During the debates held by Turkmenistan as Vice-Chairman of the UN General Assembly, representatives of the delegations of the member countries of the organization made reports. In their speeches, they touched upon such topical issues as strengthening security and stability. In this context, the current security challenges facing the region and ways to strengthen regional cooperation in combating them were outlined.
Speaking from a high rostrum, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Aksoltan Atayeva stated the need for further development of the Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation in Central Asia as a legal phenomenon similar to zones in other parts of the world, in particular — in the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean.
The formation of a zone of peace in Central Asia was made possible thanks to the institutional and legal framework of multilateral cooperation established by the countries of the region, the mechanism of cooperation of the countries of the region at the highest state level, in particular, regular consultative meetings of the heads of state of the region, the Dialogue of Women of Central Asian countries, Preventive Diplomacy Academy for Youth and other platforms.
