The holding of an international conference in Ashgabat dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's accession to UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was discussed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Myakhri Byashimova and Director of the UNESCO Cluster office Golda el- Khuri. The meeting was held on Monday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, according to the website of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

The negotiators paid attention to the prospects of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCO, noting that constructive cooperation between the parties is based on positive results achieved within the framework of UNESCO conventions ratified by Turkmenistan, as well as other international legal documents signed between the parties.

To further strengthen relations, the importance of opening UNESCO chairs in two universities of the country - the Turkmen State University named after Makhtumkuli and the Turkmen State Pedagogical Institute named after Seidi, whose activities are aimed at deepening cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Organization, was noted.

Golda el-Khuri highly appreciated the activities of Turkmenistan in initiating, preparing and adding multinational nominations to the Representative List of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: "International Holiday Novruz", "The Art of Turkmen embroidery", "Sericulture and traditions of silk production in weaving", "Traditions of retelling jokes of Khoja Nasreddin".

A number of cultural and historical monuments of Turkmenistan were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 - Ancient Merv, in 2005 – the ancient Turkmen city of Kunya-Urgench, in 2007 - the ruins of the Parthian fortress of Nisa.
