Ambassador Aksoltan Atayeva met with Fergal Miten, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the UN at the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN.

The diplomats exchanged views on priority areas of cooperation between the two countries within the UN, issues of enhancing participation in peacekeeping processes, combating climate change, and managing water resources.

The parties noted that Turkmenistan and Ireland, as neutral states and members of the Group of Friends of Neutrality, pay special attention to strengthening peace and trust in international relations, in particular at the United Nations site, the official page of the Turkmen mission to the UN notes.

Ireland declared neutrality during World War II. Then prime minister of the country, Eamon de Valera, justified this status by saying that it allows the country not to become a pawn in the games of the great powers.

The Group of Friends of Neutrality for Peace, Security and Development was established under the UN in 2020 on the initiative of Turkmenistan in order to expand the use of the institution of neutrality to improve the international political climate.
