Turkmenistan was represented at the UN summit in Qatar on Afghanistan
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has convened Special Representatives for Afghanistan for a summit in Doha, Qatar, to reach common ground on key issues such as human rights, in particular the rights of women and girls, inclusive governance, counter-terrorism and drug trafficking. The meeting is aimed at a common understanding in the international community on how to engage with the Taliban on these issues.
Turkmenistan was among the countries that sent ambassadors to this meeting. China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Pakistan, Qatar, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, European Union and Organization of Islamic Cooperation were also represented.
The two-day summit ended on Tuesday. António Guterres spoke to the press with the main conclusions of the closed meeting.
“The meeting was about developing a common international approach, and not about recognizing the de facto authorities of the Taliban,” the UN Secretary General stressed. "And what was important is that we all understood each other's concerns and limitations, but agreed that it was in everyone's interest, especially the Afghans, to work together."
The participants agreed on the need to develop an interaction strategy that would make it possible to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan and solve important problems. The presence of terrorist organizations in this country, the lack of inclusiveness, the violation of human rights, in particular the rights of women and girls, and drug trafficking are of serious concern.
Although different countries have given these issues different priorities, there is a general recognition that they are interrelated. Prioritizing one issue did not mean ignoring the importance of others, Guterres said.
"The UN will continue to use its institutional capacity to advance a forward-thinking approach that puts the Afghan people first and complements existing regional platforms and initiatives," the Secretary General said.
He added that after the current round of consultations, he is ready to convene a new similar meeting.
