For the first time, Turkmen students took part in the Willem S. Vis Competition, the world's most prestigious student competition in private international law and commercial arbitration.

Turkmenistan was represented at the legal competition by the team of the International University of Humanities and Development (IUHD) – 4th-year students Shemshat Annageldiyeva, Altyn Orazberdiyeva, Leyli Dovyyeva and second-year student Begli Atayev, who study at the faculties of International Management and private law.

The Willem S. Vis competition was held in full-time format in the Austrian city of Vienna and brought together more than 2,500 students and 1,100 arbitrators from 89 countries.

The IUHD team took part in the general round of oral hearings, presenting memoranda on behalf of the plaintiff and the defendant. The Austrian competition allowed future specialists in the field of jurisprudence to "pump up" their knowledge and gain international experience and skills for the legal profession.

The competition provides an opportunity for participants to study international commercial law and arbitration, as well as the provisions of the Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods. In addition, in an adversarial format, teams practice the skills of presenting their own position on individual legal issues, the ability to defend their point of view, reflect opponents' arguments and arbitrators' questions during the court session, develop teamwork and learn how to express their thoughts competently in English.

The competition has been held annually since 1993 under the auspices of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), a number of international arbitration institutions (ICC, LCIA, CIETAC, SCC, etc.), as well as with the support of Pace University, Queen Mary, Stockholm University, the University of Vienna (University of Vienna).
