Istanbul plans to create companion cities, the so-called "reserve" cities, reports TASS. They will be located on both sides of the Istanbul Shipping Channel, which will bypass the Bosphorus.

"Along with the Istanbul Canal, reserve cities will appear, housing developments will begin there, and we will provide places to those who agree with the urban development reform in the city," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on CNN TURK, explaining this decision by the population growth of the metropolis and the need to relocate Istanbul residents from earthquake—prone areas.

According to Erdogan, currently more than 220 thousand buildings and about 1.5 million housing units in Istanbul are under threat of destruction. 300 thousand of them need immediate demolition.
