The lead vessel in the series of dry-cargo container ships for the Caspian is planned to be laid down in May at the Russian shipyard in the Astrakhan region. Metal cutting for its embedded section was started at the Lotos production site of the Southern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center, TASS reports citing the press service of the YuTSSS.

Shipyard "Lotos" is the anchor resident of the Astrakhan special economic zone and specializes in the construction of hulls of ships of various types. According to the contract signed between the Southern Center and the state transport leasing company, four dry cargo ships will be built here. They will be launched into the water in 2025.

The design of the vessel was developed by the Vympel design bureau and is the first Russian universal dry-cargo container ship of the river-sea type. It can transport 531 containers - the number established by the international standard.

Dry cargo ships are also designed for refrigerated containers, and any kind of dry cargo can be transported in the holds, including grain, timber, lumber, as well as general cargo.

As part of the preferential leasing program for civil water transport vessels, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia intends to build more than 20 container ships to operate on the Caspian Sea by 2027, the press service of the YuTSSS reports.
