A high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on the topic of transition to zero waste to achieve sustainable development goals was held at the UN headquarters in New York under the chairmanship of Turkmenistan, the website of the Turkmenistan Mission to the UN reports.

Among the participants of the event were UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Turkish First Lady Emine Erdogan, UNDP Director for Human Settlements Muymanah Mohd Sharif and others.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Myahri Byashimova made a speech at the meeting on the need to consolidate the efforts of the world community to develop a circular economy that minimizes human impact on the environment.

Turkmenistan presented at the meeting its national experience of waste disposal and reducing the gap between regions through the development of rural areas. In this context, the Arkadag city project was touched upon, in which elements of circular technologies were applied.

In addition, representatives of Turkmenistan took part in a parallel event organized by Turkey and the UNDP Environment. During this meeting, the Turkmen delegates made presentations about the features of waste-free technologies in the new city of Arkadag.

The International Day without Waste was initiated by Turkey. During the meeting, it was reported that at the moment only 25% of all electronic waste is safely disposed of and only 55% of solid household waste is disposed of under proper control.

It was stressed that a Network of "smart" cities with low-carbon emissions was created to combine efforts in this direction.
