Interest in parrots has sharply increased in Turkey after the devastating earthquakes in the southeast of the country, sales of birds have increased against the background of information that they feel tremors in advance, writes the newspaper Yeni Akit.

Earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred on February 6 with an interval of nine hours in the province of Kahramanmaras in southeastern Turkey. Tremors were felt in 11 provinces of the country and neighboring states, including Syria.

"After the earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmarash and affected 11 provinces, the belief that birds feel an earthquake in advance and demonstrate strange behavior increased interest in parrots," the newspaper writes.

It is reported that in the Turkish province of Elazig there is an influx of citizens to pet stores.

Fatih Gurbuz, the owner of a pet store, said that after the earthquakes, sales increased almost 10 times. "As you know, citizens are showing interest because they say that birds feel an earthquake in advance," the newspaper quotes him as saying.

According to him, families also buy birds in order to overcome the fear experienced by children during the earthquake.
