The Embassy of Japan in Ashgabat announced the holding in Turkmenistan of the first Nihongo Noroku Shiken language test in 2023, an international exam that allows determining the level of knowledge of the Japanese language of foreign citizens (Japanese—Language Proficiency Test, JLPT). It will be held on July 2 in the Turkmen capital, and from March 27 to March 31, you can apply to participate in the competition. The announcement of this was posted on the Instagram page of the Japanese diplomatic mission.

JLPT is the main and most popular exam for determining and confirming the level of Japanese language proficiency of foreign citizens and has been held in Japan and abroad since 1984. There are no age restrictions for participation in the competition. Nihongo Noroku Shiken has five difficulty levels: N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5. The simplest level is N5, and the most difficult is N1, respectively.

To study and work in Japan, the N2-N1 level is required, since the requirements for study and work will be presented on an equal footing with the Japanese. The exam itself is paid and takes place in the form of a test, and it is held twice a year – on the first Sunday of July and on the first Sunday of December. Those who have successfully passed the exam are given an indefinite certificate of international standard, which is accepted by most Japanese universities of companies.

Test participants are asked to go to the Embassy of Japan in Ashgabat, located in the Paytagt shopping center (9th floor) and get a guide to the exam and an application form. More detailed information can be found at the links in English and Japanese languages.

The time and place of the exam will be published on the embassy's website additionally. The organizers ask participants to pay attention to the differentiated time of the test for different levels: N1, N2, N3 will have to gather at the cut–off site before 9:00, and those who pass levels N4 and N5 will have to be before 14:00.

The Japanese language and culture of the land of the rising sun have become very popular in Turkmenistan in recent years. Despite the complexity, the language is studied in several Turkmen schools, in two universities of the country and language centers. The Nihongo Noroku Shiken exam was held for the first time among Turkmen citizens in 2020. The current cut will be the sixth in a row. About 80-95 people apply for participation annually.

The exam is organized by the Japan Foundation together with the Japan Association for the Promotion of International Education.
