The food security and nutrition situation in Europe and Central Asia is for the most part encouraging and generally looks much better than in any other region of the world, according to a report prepared by eight UN agencies.

The document, quoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, reports that “the prevalence of undernourishment in the world rose in 2020 to 9.9% and more thereafter, but the average in more than 50 countries in Europe and Central Asia in recent years remains below 2.5%. Exceeding the global average, overweight and obesity among children and adults in the countries of the region continues to be a concern.”

The Europe and Central Asia Regional Review of Food Security and Nutrition 2022 notes that the cost of healthy eating has increased in almost all countries of Europe and Central Asia due to rising consumer food prices.

“However, with the exception of some countries, the majority of people in the region (approximately 96.4%) could afford a healthy diet, compared to a global average of 58% in 2020,” FAO said.
