Women at the forefront of the fight against climate change


On Tuesday, March 7, representatives of the beautiful half of the supporters of environmental sustainability, young eco-activists, students and participants of the Nature Protection Society of Turkmenistan gathered at the UN building in Ashgabat.

On the eve of International Women's Day, UNDP in Turkmenistan organized an open dialogue to highlight the important role of women and girls in the fight against climate change.
"Women's leadership is the key to successful actions in the fight against climate change, in the implementation of sustainable development models and solutions for a healthy planet," said Tomica Pavoic Deputy Permanent Representative of UNDP in Turkmenistan, opening the event.

The dialogue provided an opportunity to discuss and get acquainted with innovative ideas and best practices in combating climate change and achieving green growth, raising awareness among young people about how gender equality and climate change intersect.
"Every year there is more and more evidence that gender equality is an important component in combating the growing risks associated with climate change," said Stanislav Kim, head of the regional group on climate change and Disaster Resilience, Consultant on disaster risk reduction at the UNDP Regional Center in Istanbul.

In his opinion, women and girls are leaders and initiators of change, mobilizing actions to mitigate the effects of climate change and adaptation.
During the dialogue, the personal experience of women entrepreneurs who contribute to global actions to combat climate change was demonstrated, and the winners in the nomination "Women Leaders in the field of sustainable Development" were announced.

These are: Leyli Yagshyyeva, a young ambassador of the SDGs, a representative of the UNDP regional youth network - in the category "Youth activism in the fight against climate change"; Sabina Narkuliyeva, an employee of the district administration of the Danev Lebap region – "Women's leadership in the fight against climate change"; Gulnara Taijanova, eco-activist, founder of the online eco market – "Promotion principles of environmental sustainability"; Altyn Andaliyeva, eco–activist, entrepreneur - "Rural women for Sustainable Development".
― Our future depends on our actions today. We all play a role in building our future, we all have to act now to protect our world from destruction and pollution," said Leyli Yagshyyeva, a nominee of the UNDP Award for Climate Activism. - I will do everything possible to continue to be at the center of efforts to combat climate change.

The event was organized within the framework of UNDP projects implemented jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. These are projects for the green development of Ashgabat and Avaza and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems of the Aral Sea basin.
