The issue of transport should be at the center of the agenda of the United Nations as a separate area of activity, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Hojamyrat Geldimyradov said, speaking at the 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries on Monday.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the pandemic has affected investment relations between the countries. "The pandemic and other political and economic events have affected all states and negatively affected international relations, including transport," Geldimyradov said, calling for putting the issue of transport at the center of the UN agenda as a separate direction.

He recalled that Turkmenistan initiated the first global conference on sustainable transport and stood at the origins of the key resolutions of the General Assembly on sustainable transport adopted in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2021.

Hojamyrat Geldimyradov also noted the role of the least developed countries in strengthening global transport cooperation.

"Turkmenistan's economic efforts are focused on economic integration," he said, adding that the country cooperates with many countries of the world on a bilateral basis. In this context, he drew attention to energy projects linking Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, which will create opportunities for other countries in the region to gain access to reliable energy sources to meet their needs.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that the current conference will have a decisive impact on the development of common solutions and actions to improve the lives of the population of the least developed countries.

The 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC-5) is being held in Doha, Qatar, from March 5 to 9. It is designed to accelerate sustainable development where international assistance is needed most, and to use the full potential of the least developed countries, helping them move towards prosperity.

The conference is attended by world leaders, representatives of the private sector and civil society, parliamentarians and youth. It is expected that specific initiatives and specific target results related to LDC-specific tasks will be announced.
