Student debates on gender equality were held at the IIRMFA of Turkmenistan

On the eve of the International Women's Day, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan hosted student debates on gender equality issues. The event was organized with the support of the EU Delegation to Turkmenistan, the UN Population Fund and other partners.
Holding such competitions is important for the development of intellectual and communicative abilities of students, respect for different points of view and awareness of their role in promoting gender equality.
Teams from four higher educational institutions took part in the tournament: IIR MFA, Magtymguly Turkmen State University (TSU), International University for the Humanities and Development (IUHD) and D.Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages (TNIWL).
The students discussed topical topics related to gender equality, economic development and social justice. The judges of the competition were representatives of the UN, the EU, entrepreneurs and journalists.
A variety of issues were raised at the debate. For example, one of them concerned parental leave for men. Proponents of this idea argued that such a vacation contributes to a more even distribution of responsibilities for the upbringing of children and increases the attachment of the father to the child. Opponents also believed that such a vacation negatively affects a man's career and violates the traditional role of a breadwinner husband.
Another topic touched upon the issue of the separation of schools for boys and girls. Proponents of this approach argued that it promotes better learning and development of students, taking into account their psychological and physical characteristics. Opponents also believed that such separation hinders the formation of social skills and tolerance to the opposite sex.
According to the results of the debate, the students of TSU named after Magtymguly won. The second place went to the IUHD team, and the third place went to TNIWL. The winners received a symbolic cup, and other participants received souvenirs.
The debate contest has become a good platform for demonstrating the knowledge and skills of students, as well as for raising awareness of the importance of the role of women in society.
