World Cities Day is annually celebrated on October 31. On this significant occasion the SPA Nature Conservation Society of Turkmenistan organized an environmental campaign among schoolchildren. One of the venues was the Ashgabat general education school No. 136, where pupils planted trees and flowers, including 1500 young thuja trees and 50 rose bushes grown by the Society. Each of participants got the own “personal” sapling, and they together took shovels and started digging, helping each other. The girls held the plants, and the boys tamped and watered the soil in the feet of saplings. Despite all the concentration, the smile did not leave the faces of the children. They sensed that they were doing an important work and undertaking responsibility for every tree they planted. And judging by the well-known proverb about the man’s duty: “Plant a tree, build a house and raise a son”, then the boys also performed a third of their life “minimum”. Trees and bushes were planted. And when, years later, these guys return to their native school, they will be able to see what a large tree grew out of a small sapling. - Our goal is to cultivate love and care for nature in the young generation, the Society representative shared. - We also hold similar events in kindergartens and recreation centers in Gokdere. The SPA Nature Conservation Society of Turkmenistan also gave the school teachers an electronic textbook introducing to the plants and animals of the country, its natural beauties, and the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan. Now they are preparing for the nationwide voluntary work day to be held on November 9. The plans include other benign actions. On the World Cities Day, the UN Development Program held a seminar on energy efficiency and energy saving in sustainable cities. During the event, which was attended by representatives of the Parliament, ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, the “green” construction as an important component of sustainable cities was discussed.
