Presenting the draft resolution at the 60th plenary meeting of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on February 24 in New York, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan Aksoltan Atayeva emphasized the vital role of this Center (UNRCCA) in facilitating dialogue between national governments, finding solutions to emerging problems and eliminating potential threats.
During its 15 years of existence, the Center, which is headquartered in Ashgabat, in particular, has provided governments with a platform for dialogue on the most complex regional issues, ranging from the management of shared resources to transnational threats such as terrorism and violent extremism, organized crime, proliferation drugs and the situation in Afghanistan.
The new resolution on UNRCCA highlights the Centre's valuable experience in using its expertise for prevention, early warning and mediation. The document also includes new paragraphs on recent developments in the Central Asian region and welcomes the Center's initiatives to empower women and youth in the field of preventive diplomacy.
The General Assembly encouraged UNRCCA to continue to play an active role and continue to liaise with the governments of the region and other stakeholders; maintain contact with relevant regional organizations and facilitate coordination and exchange of information; work closely with governments to strengthen the region's ability to overcome challenges to peace and stability through preventive diplomacy and dialogue.
The UN General Assembly welcomed the assistance of the Center to the implementation of the initiatives of the Central Asian countries to create a stable, peaceful and prosperous region.
