The Athletics Championship in Istanbul is used to support the restoration of Turkey
The European Athletics Association will hold the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul to support efforts to eliminate the consequences of the devastating earthquake. The games are scheduled to take place from March 2 to 5, 2023 at the Ataköy Athletics Arena in Istanbul.
The Association will reduce side celebrations to a minimum and will not resort to local advertising of competitions. The Association will also donate 1 euro from each ticket sold for earthquake recovery activities.
"Holding a sport event at such a time is not a priority. However, the local organizing committee of the competition has demonstrated its commitment and willingness to continue preparing for the competition," said the president of the European Athletics Association, Dobromir Karamarinov, noting that the association supports the decision of the organizing committee.
As a sign of the solidarity of the athletics community with the Turkish people, the head of the sports organization called for sharing a video, voice or text message with words of support by sending them to social@european-athletics.org .
"We are all grieving together with our Turkish friends and want to pay tribute to the victims and all those who suffered as a result of the earthquake," he said.
