The protective agent is an inhaler to protect the lungs from influenza and coronavirus. The invention of specialists from the University of North Carolina will help replace medical face masks, if it is impossible to use them, according to the journal Nature Materials.

The development of scientists is a powder intended for inhalation. It consists of a spherical hydrogel - gelatin and acrylic acid, which, when combined with natural mucus in the lungs, creates a protective layer that prevents the penetration of pathogens.

During the tests, the drug showed a high degree of protection - after injection, it retained its effect for a day. The most pronounced effectiveness was observed in the first eight hours. Repeated use of the inhaler does not harm the respiratory tract. The substance is completely excreted from the body after 48 hours.

The new development acts as an "invisible mask" and is very convenient for people in situations where there are difficulties with standard personal protection measures, for example, during sports, with close social interaction or eating, the authors of the project note.
