The first experience of sequencing influenza viruses was conducted in Turkmenistan

The first successful experience of influenza virus sequencing has been conducted in Turkmenistan. This is reported on the page of the WHO representative office in Turkmenistan.
Influenza virus sequencing is a study in which the DNA or RNA of the influenza virus is analyzed. Sequencing allows researchers to determine how the virus has changed as it evolves, and to choose a more effective treatment for the patient.
The test in Turkmenistan was conducted during the WHO technical advisory mission to Turkmenistan to strengthen national capacity in the field of influenza virus sequencing.
During the visit of experts from the WHO Regional Office for Europe, Turkmen specialists conducted joint genome-wide sequencing of 10 samples of influenza A virus. Information on sequenced influenza viruses was uploaded to the global GISAID platform (Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data), which provides access to virus genomes.
Turkmen doctors got acquainted with the use of the Next-Generation sequencing method on the Ion Torrent platform for the genetic characterization of influenza viruses.
