FIDE approves Russia's transition to the Asian Chess Federation

The FIDE Council considered a report prepared by the Constitutional Commission at the request of the Russian Chess Federation on joining the Asian Chess Federation.
The Asian Chess Federation is expected to make a decision on this request at its General Assembly, which will be held in Abu Dhabi on February 28. Its adoption will automatically mean that the Russian Chess Federation is withdrawing from the European Chess Union.
In view of this, the FIDE Board made two main decisions. One of them is about renaming Zone 1.6 (Russia) to Zone 3.8, as part of Asia, from May 1, 2023.
The second decision concerns additional measures to protect those players who at this stage decide to leave the Russian Chess Federation and join a European chess federation.
