Scientists from Oxford University (UK) together with colleagues from Aarhus (Denmark) and Buenos Aires (Argentina) conducted a study of the impact of TV series and movies on the human body. The results of the experiments are published in the journal Science Advances.

The study involved 176 people who helped in obtaining data on the work of the brain during the process of immersion in the fictional world of cinema.

Scientists with the help of special devices observed the brain activity of the subjects, while they watched films of different genres: comedies, melodramas, action movies, fantasy.

The study showed that in the process of immersion in a movie or TV series, the brain performs significantly less calculations than during other tasks. An even more surprising fact is that even rest and idleness in any case require a lot of mental effort from a person.

The authors of the material claim that watching TV shows and movies can help a person cope with stress, cope better with various mental disorders and get out of depression faster.

The genre of the film, to which the audience devotes their time, is also of great importance. The researchers note that people who prefer horror films are much better at coping with chronic pain and much easier to tolerate various unpleasant sensations in the body.
