Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan got acquainted with the situation in the provinces affected by the devastating earthquakes, Anadolu agency reports.

The first Turkish leader arrived in the city of Kahramanmarash, which became the epicenter of the earthquakes that shook Turkey on February 6. He visited the local Onikishubat stadium, where the Department for the Prevention and Elimination of Consequences of Emergency Situations (AFAD) has set up a tent camp for citizens left homeless.

In the city of Pazarcik, Erdogan inquired about the progress of work on dismantling the rubble and visited a tent city installed in the Ataturk Park.

One of the cities affected by the magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes was Hatay, where the president also arrived.

"Today is a day of trials for us, I hope that our people will cope with this," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, calling on the people of Turkey to unity and solidarity in the face of disaster.

The President said that the government will provide new apartments to residents of 10 earthquake-affected provinces during the year, and each of the families will receive assistance from the state in the amount of 10 thousand liras.

According to scientists, the cyclical nature of powerful earthquakes in Turkey was extremely unusual.

Paul Martin May, a professor at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, believes that the second strong earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred a few hours after the first. This is "extremely unusual" on a global scale of seismic phenomena. Similar phenomena are also called "double earthquakes," he said.

"The epicenter of the second earthquake was 100 km from the first one. This means that the second earthquake was not an aftershock of the first. Each of them had its own aftershocks," he explained.
