The regular session of the Turkmenistan’s national committee on the activities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was held in the capital city

On the instructions of the President of Turkmenistan, a regular meeting of the National Committee of Turkmenistan on the activities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, wide-scale issues were discussed within the framework of cooperation with a large specialized agency of the United Nations. In 2023, in particular, within the framework of the proposals put forward by the country to be included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of mankind, plans for further expansion of cooperation were determined.

Last year, the delegation of Turkmenistan participated in the meeting of the national groups of TURKSOY member countries on UNESCO affairs held in Bursa, Republic of Turkey. The decision to declare 2024 as "the year of Magtymguly Pyragy, the great poet and thinker of the Turkic world" in honor of the 300th anniversary of the prominent thinker and poet of the Turkmen people was unanimously adopted.

At the 17th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco, the decision to include "Turkmen embroidery art" on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the proposal of Turkmenistan was unanimously adopted.

Within the framework of the said Convention, together with foreign experts, the specialists of the country selected the unique historical objects in the territory of Turkmenistan - Ancient Merv, Koneurgench and Ancient Nisa Castles. They are included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. Also, "Gorogly" dance, "Kushtepdi singing and dancing art" and Turkmen national carpet art were included in the list of outstanding intangible cultural heritage of mankind.

Preparations are ongoing together with the representatives of the constituent entities of the Republic of Uzbekistan for inclusion of the Koytendag mountain ecosystem was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the "Turanian Deserts of the Pacific Belt" with the participation of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan within the framework of the "Man and the Biosphere" Program of UNESCO and the "Ahalteke Equestrian Art and Horse Dressing Traditions" the multilateral proposal in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

In accordance with the international norms of UNESCO, preparations are being made for breeding the Akhalteke horses, which are considered the national value of our people, and for including the Turkmen trout breeding methods in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind. Ashgabat's inclusion in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's network of creative cities in the field of "Design" was also discussed. Also, the results achieved in this area and the planned activities were discussed.

In the session, it was noted that the documents were prepared for the establishment of UNESCO departments in higher educational institutions of the country, in particular, "Cultural heritage - from the past to the future" at Magtymguly Turkmen State University, and "Protection of the environment - development of environmental education and culture among young people" at Seyitnazar Seydi Turkmen State Pedagogical Institute. Work was carried out to include a number of general education schools of the country in the list of Associated Schools of UNESCO.

New clubs called "Culture of Peace" were opened at the Turkmen Institute of National World Languages named after Dovlettmammamet Azadi and "Languages of the World" at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

During the meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan on UNESCO's work, important issues such as strengthening the role of the country in the expansion of international scientific relations, opportunities for cooperation in digital projects and information exchange were considered, and organizational and other areas were discussed.
