Europe is on the verge of a catastrophic drought due to the reduction of groundwater reserves. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the Institute of Geodesy of the Technical University in Austria, Focus reports with reference to the press service of the university.

The intense heat of 2018-2019 led to a sharp drop in the water level, which has not yet recovered, according to scientists.

The study shows that drought damages nature, as well as causes shortages in agriculture and electricity generation. In addition, many aquatic animal species have already lost their habitat and become extinct.

Scientists will continue to observe and document the drought, as well as look for methods to prevent it.
