Intersectoral approach to preventing violent extremism discussed in Turkmenistan


An intersectoral approach to the implementation of initiatives to prevent violent extremism (PVE) was discussed during a seminar organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Development Program, the organization said in a press release.
The training was held in Ashgabat and five pilot centers in the regions of the country.
The participants — representatives of ministries and departments, public organizations of Turkmenistan, mayors of regions and the capital, as well as members of advisory groups, considered the role of community leaders and family members in preventing violent extremism, measures to combat stigmatization as one of the causes of PVE. The experts called for increasing the participation of young people, increasing their awareness and skills in the field of PVE.
Nicola Franceschetti, representative of the EU Regional Delegation to Kazakhstan, said that in recent years the spread of violent extremism poses a serious threat to the efforts of the international community to strengthen peace and security and stressed that its prevention among communities and vulnerable groups, especially young people, is a priority.
The seminar was organized within the framework of the Country component of the global project: "Strengthening resilience to violent extremism in Asia (STRIVE Asia): The EU-UN Joint Partnership", funded by the European Union. It is aimed at strengthening the resilience of local communities by supporting State and public organizations in achieving goals related to the prevention of violent extremism among young people.
On January 27, within the framework of this project, a round table with national partners will be held, where they will discuss support for youth initiatives through public associations, involvement of the younger generation in making socially significant decisions.
