The World Health Organization has updated recommendations on wearing protective medical masks, methods of treatment and assistance with COVID-19, the official website of the organization reports.

The decision to make changes was made based on the results of the analysis of relevant data by the groups developing guidelines.

According to the updated recommendations, masks should be worn after contact with patients or persons with suspected COVID-19, in crowded conditions, as well as in a closed or poorly ventilated room.

The updates also cover the isolation period for COVID-19 patients. Thus, the isolation regime of a patient with COVID-19 can be terminated with a negative result of an express antigen test.

In the presence of symptoms in a patient who has not been tested, the new recommendations suggest 10 days of isolation from the beginning of the appearance of signs. Previously, at least three days were added to 10 days of isolation after the symptoms stopped.

WHO has also changed the urgent recommendations for the use of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (also known under the brand name Paxlovid). Now pregnant women or nursing mothers who have COVID-19 in mild form are recommended to drink this drug as prescribed by a doctor.

WHO continues to strongly discourage the use of medicines sotrovimab and kasirivimab-imdevimab for the treatment of COVID-19.
