The Winter Universiade 2023 to be held in the American Village near New York
On January 12, the world Winter Universiade 2023 will begin - a sporting event that is held once every two years among students from all over the world. The games will take place in a small village near New York (USA) called Lake Placid.
This year, almost 1,500 students from universities in 50 countries will take part in the competition. At the upcoming competitions, 86 sets of medals in 12 sports will be played. The main program will include 9 sports, as well as 3 additional ones, which were selected by the organizers of the Universiade. The Universiade is an event held by the International University Sports Organization MOSS (FISU). The university games originate from the USA, where in 1095 the first sports competitions among university students were held. From 1923 to 1957, the tournament was called the "World Student Games" and only since 1959 received the usual name "Universiade".
Universiades, like the Olympic Games, are summer and winter and are held once every 2 years. Young athletes have their own requirements: a student representing the country must be its citizen, the age must be strictly from 17 to 28 years old, and the participant must also be an active university student or graduate from an educational institution no earlier than 1 year before the start of the competition.
Due to the geopolitical situation, the International Committee for Student Games decided to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in the Universiade. Also, the venue of the Summer Universiade 2023, which was to be held in Yekaterinburg (RF), was moved. Now the competition will be organized in Chengdu, China from June 26 to July 7.
The Winter Universiade 2023 will end on January 22.
